The Sixth Sense: Clinical Intuition and Assessment in Counseling
Clinical intuition is real, it is research-supported, and it is trainable — yet most clinicians neither understand its mechanisms nor use it deliberately. This 1-hour continuing education course examines the neuroscience and psychology of clinical intuition: how pattern recognition, somatic awareness, and implicit learning combine to produce the clinical hunches that experienced practitioners rely on, when to trust them, when they are contaminated by bias, and how to develop them more deliberately through reflective practice and supervised experience. The course uses the film The Sixth Sense as a frame for exploring the clinical themes of hidden perception, unspoken communication, and the revelation that changes the meaning of everything that came before — a resonant metaphor for the moments of clinical insight that transform a case.
