Sex Therapy Fundamentals: Evidence-Based Approaches for Counselors
A graduate-level continuing education course introducing professional counselors to the history, theoretical models, and evidence-based clinical practice of sex therapy. Participants examine the foundational frameworks of Masters and Johnson, Kaplan's triphasic model, and Basson's circular model of female sexual response; evidence-based treatment for desire, arousal, orgasmic, and sexual pain disorders; couples-based and communication interventions; and the ethical scope-of-practice, referral, and treatment-planning competencies required for responsible generalist practice.

What you'll learn
- Describe the historical development of sex therapy and compare the linear, triphasic, and circular models of human sexual response.
- Apply evidence-based interventions for sexual desire and arousal difficulties, including sensate focus and cognitive-behavioral strategies.
- Identify empirically supported treatments for orgasmic disorders and genito-pelvic pain/penetration difficulties.
- Implement couples-based and communication interventions that address relational and systemic contributors to sexual concerns.
- Evaluate referral criteria and articulate the boundaries of generalist counselor scope of practice in sexual health care.
- Develop integrated, biopsychosocial treatment plans that incorporate medical, psychological, and relational dimensions of sexual functioning.
