This course equips mental health professionals to practice within a neurodiversity-affirming framework, replacing deficit-based approaches with identity-first care that honors the lived experience of autistic and ADHD clients. Content includes clinical profiles, masking, late diagnosis, affirming practice adaptations, and equity considerations for underrepresented neurodivergent populations.

  • Distinguish the neurodiversity paradigm from the deficit model and explain the clinical implications of each framework.
  • Describe the clinical profiles of ADHD and autism using current evidence-based models, including Barkley's executive function model and the double empathy problem.
  • Identify the psychological and physiological costs of masking and camouflaging for autistic and ADHD clients.
  • Apply affirming practice adaptations — environmental, procedural, and therapeutic — to assessment and treatment with neurodivergent clients.
