Get Out: Recognizing Coercive Control in Intimate Partner Violence
A relationship can seem loving to outsiders while it quietly removes a person’s autonomy. Framed by the premise of the film Get Out, this three-hour course teaches licensed counselors to recognize coercive control before physical violence appears, distinguish it from situational couple conflict using Stark’s coercive control model and Johnson’s typology, screen with HITS and WAST, interpret the Danger Assessment, build collaborative safety plans that account for technology, finances, children, and pets, and decline conjoint couples therapy safely when it is contraindicated. A full ethics hour applies the ACA Code of Ethics (2014), HIPAA, and state duty-to-warn variation to confidentiality, subpoenas, custody disputes, and documentation in IPV cases.
