Cultural competence has long been the standard framework for multicultural training in counseling, but the research on effective cross-cultural practice increasingly points to a different construct: cultural humility — an ongoing orientation of curiosity, self-reflection, and openness to learning from clients about their own cultural experience. This 3-hour continuing education course examines the distinction between competence and humility, the evidence base for culturally humble practice, and the specific skills and dispositions that characterize clinicians who work effectively across cultural difference. You will explore implicit bias and its clinical effects, power dynamics in the therapeutic relationship, culturally adapted treatment approaches, and the practice of cultural self-examination — understanding how your own cultural background shapes your clinical assumptions and blind spots.
