Working with Justice-Involved Clients: Ethics, Assessment, and Reentry

A two-hour clinical course for licensed counselors who see clients on probation, parole, pretrial release, in problem-solving courts, or in the first weeks after incarceration. Section 1 works through the ethics of mandated treatment: the Sequential Intercept Model, the "who is the client" problem, informed consent and the limits of confidentiality with supervising officers and courts, release-of-information practice, documentation a judge will read, and engagement rather than coercion using motivational interviewing and the Risk-Need-Responsivity model. Section 2 covers trauma, serious mental illness, substance use, and traumatic brain injury in justice-involved populations, trauma-informed assessment in correctional and community settings, suicide and overdose risk around arrest and release, the structured risk tools counselors encounter and their limits, and a practical reentry plan spanning housing, benefits, medication and MOUD continuity, family, collateral consequences, peer support, and problem-solving courts.

What you'll learn

  • Describe the six intercepts of the Sequential Intercept Model and identify the clinical opportunities and constraints that characterize each one.
  • Apply ACA Code of Ethics standards A.2, B.1 through B.3, B.6, and Section C to informed consent, confidentiality limits, release-of-information practice, and documentation with mandated and court-ordered clients.
  • Distinguish engagement from coercion in mandated treatment by applying motivational interviewing principles and the dual-role relationship model to supervision-referred clients.
  • Explain the Risk-Need-Responsivity model and differentiate criminogenic needs, non-criminogenic needs, and responsivity factors in treatment planning.
  • Conduct trauma-informed assessment of justice-involved clients that addresses serious mental illness, substance use, traumatic brain injury, and suicide and overdose risk in the periods surrounding arrest, incarceration, and release.
  • Construct a reentry plan that sequences housing, benefits reinstatement, medication and MOUD continuity, family reunification, employment, collateral consequences, and peer support from pre-release through the first 30 days in the community.
