Intersectionality in Clinical Practice: Race, Gender, Class, and Disability
Intersectionality is widely cited and rarely operationalized. This 2-CE course takes the framework from Crenshaw and Collins and turns it into clinical behavior: how to read the structural and interpersonal forces acting on a client at once, how to broach identity repeatedly without interrogating, how to apply the DSM-5-TR Cultural Formulation Interview through an intersectional lens, how to recognize and repair microaggressions you commit, how to adapt evidence-based treatment without stereotyping, and how to write treatment plans and documentation that account for transportation, benefits, caregiving, and accessibility. Built around the MSJCC, the ADDRESSING model, minority stress theory, and the ACA Advocacy Competencies.

What you'll learn
- Differentiate intersectional analysis from additive "diversity checklist" approaches and explain why the distinction changes case formulation.
- Classify examples of oppression as structural, institutional, interpersonal, or internalized and identify which level a given clinical intervention addresses.
- Apply the ADDRESSING model and the MSJCC privilege/marginalization quadrants to map a client's and a clinician's positionality in a specific case.
- Describe documented patterns of diagnostic bias, including overdiagnosis of psychotic disorders in Black men and underdiagnosis of ADHD and autism in girls and women, and name practices that reduce the risk.
- Conduct broaching conversations and administer the DSM-5-TR Cultural Formulation Interview in a way that elicits intersectional social history without interrogation.
- Design treatment plans, documentation, and advocacy actions that account for structural barriers such as transportation, benefits, caregiving, and accessibility.
