Disability-Affirming Counseling: Physical, Sensory, and Intellectual Disabilities
More than one in four U.S. adults lives with a disability, yet most counselors receive almost no training in disability-affirming practice. This 2-hour course moves from the medical, social, and biopsychosocial (WHO ICF) models of disability through ableism, disability identity, and diagnostic overshadowing into concrete clinical adaptation for clients with physical disabilities and chronic illness, Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients, clients who are blind or have low vision, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. Learners leave with ADA Title II/III obligations for their own practice, an accommodation-by-disability reference table, adapted-CBT techniques grounded in Hronis et al. and NICE NG54, a supported-decision-making framework for consent and capacity, and a plan for keeping the client as the client when families and support staff are in the room.
