Serious mental illness — schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder with psychotic features — affects an estimated 13 million Americans and remains one of the most undertreated and misunderstood presentations in mental health practice. This 1-hour continuing education course examines the clinical realities of serious mental illness beyond diagnostic labels: the neurobiological foundations of psychotic disorders, evidence-based treatment approaches including coordinated specialty care and supported employment, the clinician's role in a collaborative treatment team, the therapeutic relationship with clients who may have limited insight into their illness, and the ethical dimensions of working with clients who face significant stigma and systemic barriers to care.
