AI in Suicide Risk Prediction and Crisis Detection

This intermediate 3-hour CE course examines how machine-learning and predictive-analytics tools are used to flag suicide risk and detect crisis across electronic health records, digital-phenotyping signals, crisis lines, and consumer technology. Clinicians learn to interpret model performance honestly, weigh the ethical and legal stakes of algorithmic risk scoring, and integrate AI-generated flags with structured clinical judgment and collaborative safety planning. Approximately 18,900 words.

What you'll learn

  • Describe at least three operational suicide-risk prediction systems (such as VA REACH VET and Mental Health Research Network models) and identify the data sources each draws upon.
  • Calculate and interpret sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value, and explain why a high area-under-the-curve still yields many false positives for a low-base-rate outcome.
  • Analyze the ethical and legal implications of algorithmic suicide-risk flags, including duty-to-protect interplay, privacy of risk scores, consent for monitoring, and equity in risk scoring.
  • Apply a structured professional-judgment approach that treats an AI flag as a prompt for assessment rather than a verdict, avoiding both dismissal and over-reaction.
  • Demonstrate how to integrate an algorithmic risk flag into collaborative safety planning and documentation that references the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
  • Evaluate crisis-detection workflows in consumer technology and clinical settings against quality-assurance and 988-integration standards.

Who it's for

Licensed mental health professionals (LPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs, NCCs, psychologists) involved in suicide risk assessment, crisis services, or organizational safety programs.
